Angular cheilitis causes
Angular cheilitis causes are mainly any conditions that cause saliva to build up in the sides of the mouth to create a moisturized environment where an infection can occur.
One such condition is the use of ill-fitting dentures. In fact, when the dentures are not fitting properly, they may cause the over closure of the mouth. And as a result of this over closure, small folds start to form in the sides of the lips and saliva starts to accumulate in them.
An other condition that can be considered one of the main angular cheilitis causes is the constant licking of the lips. This condition is more frequent among teenagers. It occurs generally after a long exposure to the sun or the cold wind that causes the lips to dry out and become irritated. When this hapens the person starts to lick the lips to bring a certain relief and causes saliva to accumulate in the sides of the mouth.
Angular cheilitis is more common among people who have a deficiency in vitamin B2, B3, B6 and B12. People who have a deficiency in iron are also in a higher risk of having angular cheilitis.
In some rare cases, angular cheilitis can also be caused by contact dermatitis or allergies to some types of lip sticks or tooth pastes.
