What is angular cheilitis ?
Angular cheilitis is also known as perleche, angular stomatitis or cheilosis. It is the cracking of the sides of the mouth following a fungal or bacterial infection.
What causes angular chelitis ?
Angular cheilitis is caused by the infection of the sides of he lips by the fungus Candida Albicans or by a bacteria (staph). Genarally, this infection occurs following any conditions that causes saliva to build up in the sides of the lips for an extended period of time. These conditions include the use of ill-fitting dentures, the constant licking of the lips or the drooling during sleep. People who have a deficiency in iron and vitamin B are more vulnerable to this problem.
What are the symptoms of angular cheilitis ?
The symptoms of angular cheilitis are: the cracking of the sides of the lips, a red swelling around the sides of the mouth and a pain whenever the mouth is opened.
Is angular cheilitis contageous ?
Angular cheilitis is not contageous and it is not a dangerous problem either.
How is angular cheilitis treated ?
The most widely prescribed treatment for angular cheilitis is 1% hydro cortisol. However other antifungal creams like Mycostatin-II or Mycolog can also be prescribed.
