Cracked mouth corners and angular cheilitis :
The predominant sign or symptom of angular cheilitis are the cracked mouth corners that hurt whenever the infected person opens the mouth to eat laugh or speak.
In severe cases of angular cheilitis, the cracked mouth corners can even bleed or become shallow ulcers that get covered by a crust.
Some times, a red swelling may start to spread around the mouth mainly in the area near the sides of the lips.
The cause of cracked mouth corners (angular cheilitis) can be any condition that causes saliva to build up in the sides of the mouth. One such condition is the use of ill-fitting dentures. Another condition that may fcause angular cheilitis is the drooling during sleep and the constant licking of the lips.
People who have a deficiency in vitamin B2, B3, B6 or B12 as well as those who have a deficiency in iron are more at risk of having cracked mouth corners.
Contact dermatitis and allergies to some lipsticks or toothpastes can also be a cause of angular cheilitis for some people.
